Grapefruit (Citrus x paradisi) is a hybrid between an orange and a pomelo that is native to the Caribbean island of Barbados. There are many varieties with different skin and pulp colors, with the red and pink varieties being the most common because of their sweet taste. But the essential oil is made from white grapefruit; a yellow-colored variety that is a favorite in the juice and perfume industries.

The oil can often give a matte appearance to skin and add a shine to hair.
