Sumac wax, or Japan wax, creates a protective layer and adds shine and lustre to the skin and hair.
What is sumac wax?
Sumac wax is a vegetable wax made from the berries and stems of the Rhus succedanea tree, also known as the rhus tree, Japanese wax tree or sumac tree (not the same as poison sumac, although they are from the same family!).
To make sumac wax, a decoction is made first, then the resulting paste is left under the sun to dry and blanch.
What are the properties of sumac wax?
- Containing only 5% fatty acids, it has more viscosity than other waxes. This means it thickens formulas while also giving a nice, malleable texture.
- Sumac wax protects the skin and prevents moisture loss by creating a thin, breathable layer on the skin's surface. It's considered an emollient and gives a smooth appearance.
- On the hair, these same layering properties give shine and a soft feel.
Hold on!
Suma wax has been used by sumo wrestlers and geishas for centuries to shape and maintain their hairstyle. It is frequently used nowadays in haircare products for the same reason.
