Alkanna tinctoria

A member of the borage family, Alkanet is a herbaceous flowering plant. The roots of the plant have been used to make natural dye since antiquity.

The second part of alkanet’s botanical name, tinctoria, comes from Latin tinctura which means dye. Alkanet roots provide a pigment that can vary from deep red to vibrant shades of pink. The dye is extracted by soaking the roots in oil.

We use different oils to make our alkanet extracts, such as castor, jojoba and almond. Each oil has its own unique properties, but you can be sure they are moisturising and conditioning.
