We Are All Resilient

There’s no doubt, we are in an era of tumult.

Things are unpredictable and uncertain. There’s a lot of noise and it’s hard to keep our attention on the long arc of history. Hard-earned freedoms can no longer be taken for granted and agreements on issues of social justice are being questioned. Issues that we care about at Lush — freedom of movement, queer rights, racial justice and bold solutions to the climate emergency, to name a few — are under attack.

We believe in the power of freedom of speech. For over a decade we’ve supported grassroots organizations that do just that through our charitable giving, we’ve campaigned on some of the most pressing issues of our time, and we’re not stopping any time soon.

Know Your Rights

With the resistance needed, we know we also need resilience. We’ve gathered resources from dozens of leading social justice organizations into six Know Your Rights guides, available for a limited time in Lush shops, and here for download. They provide information on how to effectively raise your voice and keep yourself safe.

Here are a few of their voices:

“The right to freedom of expression and the right to protest are not only core to our democracy, these freedoms are also essential to protecting other fundamental civil rights and civil liberties including, racial justice, immigrants’ rights, women’s rights, LGBTQ+ rights, voting rights, and the right to an education free from censorship. The more people in this country who understand their constitutional rights and fight for them, the harder it will be for our freedom to be taken from us."

“We are facing a constitutional crisis where our neighbors are being picked off our streets and shipped out of the country without due process and that should scare us all. Today is the day to act because when the people are united, we can never be defeated. We are bigger than hate. While our leaders are focused on using our resources to sow hate, we should be focused on compassion and helping one another create a better tomorrow for all of our families. Together, we will win!”

"Schools should be a place where students not only learn about democracy and civic engagement, but also be encouraged to practice. Given the severity of the crises in the world that threaten students' future, it is imperative that they be introduced to a toolbox full of approaches to social change. The traditional textbook examples are marches and voting and while useful, no social movement has succeeded with those two strategies alone."

“We are experiencing a decline of quality in every sector of American life — from the ability to put food on the table and a roof over our heads, to quality education and healthcare. There are increasing attacks on our human and civil rights: the right to vote, the right to free speech, the right to a trial — and the right to not be deported to another country without due process. The power of the people has always been in our willingness to come together and take collective action. Now more than ever, we must work together toward a shared vision of a world where every person’s rights and dignity are respected and upheld.”
