‘Insane in the perfume, insane in the scent!’ - Cypress Oil, 1993

Lush purchases cypress oil from a producer in Spain. It is obtained by steam distillation from the young twigs, stems and needles of the <i>Cupressus sempervirens</i>, a tall tree native to the Mediterranean region. Through their production, the distiller adds value to waste. Indeed, they collaborate with local gardeners who sell them cut branches from private gardens. However, this source is not always sufficient for their production demand, so they also rely on cypress plantations as a stable and secure supply.

The Mediterranean cypress is emblematic of Italian landscapes, slicing the sky with its slender dark-green silhouette. Cultivated as ornamental trees for millennia, it is a central essence of the famous Iranian (formerly Persian) gardens. The clean, woody and energising aroma of its oil is frequently found in perfume blends. Aromatherapists believe that inhaling cypress soothes emotional stress. It is also particularly comforting during the winter season, thought to stimulate feelings of joy and happiness.
